illusion of the pierced hand

illusion of the pierced hand
Also known as hole-in-the-hand. Both terms refer to a " binocular illusion that can be induced by holding a small tube in front of one eye with one hand, while the palm of the other hand is placed with the ulnar edge touching the tube about 20 cm in front of the other eye. By focusing on a point in the distance, it will appear as if one is looking through a hole in one's hand. The first description of the phenomenon stems from an 1881 article by the American geologist Joseph LeConte (1823-1901).
